Explained: Matching Magnification & Size to Your Hunting Region

Seven TORIC models. Seven different jobs. The reason TRACT builds the lineup this way is simple: a binocular built for whitetails in the hardwoods is not the same tool as a binocular built for mule deer across a canyon.

One of the most common questions we hear at TRACT is also the most honest: “Why do you make so many different binoculars? Isn’t one of them just better than the others?”

The answer is no—and the reason no is the whole point of this article. Every TORIC binocular uses the same SCHOTT HT glass, the same ED elements, the same phase-coated and dielectric-coated prisms, the same magnesium chassis, the same IPX7 sealing, the same argon purging, and the same lifetime warranty. The optical quality is identical across the lineup.

What changes is the geometry—the relationship between magnification and objective lens size—and that geometry is what fits the binocular to your terrain. Get the geometry right for where you hunt and you have the perfect tool. Get it wrong and you’ve spent $700 on a binocular that fights your hunt instead of helping it.

This guide walks through each of the six TORIC models and tells you, plainly, who they’re built for and which region of country and style of hunting they’re designed to dominate.

TORIC Binocular Lineup

The TORIC Binocular Lineup at a Glance

Model

Exit Pupil

FOV @ 1,000 yds

Weight

Best For

TORIC 8×32

4.0mm

424 ft

23 oz

Compact, bowhunting, treestand, hardwoods

TORIC 8×42

5.25mm

377 ft

27 oz

All-day glassing, low light, mixed terrain

TORIC 10×42

4.2mm

341 ft

27 oz

Mid-range hunting, mixed cover

TORIC 10×50

5.0mm

304 ft

32 oz

Open Western country, dawn/dusk in big country

TORIC 12.5×50

4.0mm

272 ft

32 oz

Long-range glassing, mountain hunting

TORIC 15×56

3.7mm

236 ft

39 oz

Tripod-mounted spotting, alpine and PRS use

Notice the trade-offs as you move down the table. Higher magnification gives you more reach but a narrower field of view, a smaller exit pupil (less low-light brightness when held at the eye), and more weight. None of those trade-offs are good or bad in the abstract—they only make sense in the context of where you hunt.

KEY PRINCIPLE: There is no “best” TORIC. Outdoor Life named it a “Great Buy” award winner for a reason: the image quality rivals full-sized 8×42 binoculars in a chassis that disappears into a turkey vest, bino harness, or bowhunting pack.

Built for | TORIC 8×32

Bowhunters in treestands (holds in one hand while the bow is in the other)

Eastern whitetail in dense hardwoods

Turkey hunters (close-quarters glassing, slipping a tom out of shadow)

Spring scouting and shed hunting

Travel — fits in carry-on, glove box, daypack

Why the geometry works | TORIC 8×32

The 8x magnification gives you a generous 424-foot field of view at 1,000 yards—the widest in the lineup. In thick timber where deer slip through narrow gaps, you need to see broad swaths of cover quickly. The 32mm objectives keep weight to 23 ounces, which matters when you’re glassing one-handed from a treestand or carrying gear into the woods on a 14-mile elk hunt.

The trade-off: the 4.0mm exit pupil is smaller than the 8×42 or 10×50, which means low-light performance is excellent but not the absolute best in the lineup. For most of dawn and dusk you won’t notice. In the last 15 minutes before legal light ends in deep timber, you might.

TORIC 8×42 — The All-Day, Any-Terrain Workhorse | TORIC Binocular Lineup

If we could only sell one TORIC binocular to a hunter who told us nothing about how they hunt, it would be the 8×42. That extra millimeter is exactly what your eye needs at dawn and dusk when your pupil dilates to ~5mm. The 8×42 collects every available photon and feeds it to your eye without any of it spilling around the edge of your pupil.

The 8x magnification keeps the image steady in hand. The 377-foot field of view at 1,000 yards is broad enough to scan terrain quickly. At 27 ounces it’s carry-able all day. There’s a reason Ron Spomer keeps coming back to the 8×42 in side-by-side tests against $2,500 European glass—the geometry is just right.

HUNTER’S TAKE: If you’re torn between an 8×42 and a 10×42 and you hunt in mixed cover or low light, take the 8×42. The clarity, brightness, and reduced eye fatigue will outperform the extra magnification every time.

TORIC 10×42 — The Versatile Mid-Range Pick | TORIC Binocular Lineup

The 10×42 is the most popular binocular configuration in the hunting world, and the TORIC 10×42 is no exception. It hits a balance point: more reach than an 8×42, lighter than a 10×50, less specialized than a 12.5×50.

Built for | TORIC 10×42

Mid-range glassing (50–600 yards)

Midwest farm country and CRP

Late-season muzzleloader and rifle whitetail

Mixed terrain hunters who don’t need 10×50 reach

Tripod-ready hunters who want one binocular for everything

Why the geometry works | TORIC 10×42

The 4.2mm exit pupil is the borderline number. It’s smaller than your dilated pupil at first light, which means you lose a bit of brightness in the lowest-light moments. But it’s good enough for 95% of hunting situations—and you get an extra 2x magnification compared to the 8×42, which translates to noticeably more detail at distance.

The 10×42 is the most-shipped TORIC model. Most hunters who buy it never wish they’d gotten something else. The hunters who do wish they’d gotten something else are usually trading up to the 10×50 because they discovered they hunt low-light situations more than they realized.

TORIC 10×50 — The Big-Country Glasser | TORIC Binocular Lineup

When the country gets big, the glass gets bigger. That means you get the full benefit of every photon the objective lens collects, even at last legal shooting light. The 50mm objectives gather roughly 42% more light than the 42mm versions—and you can see it in your eyes the moment you put the binos to your face at dawn.

The trade-off is weight (32 ounces) and a narrower 304-foot field of view at 1,000 yards. In dense Eastern hardwoods that narrower FOV is a real handicap. In open Western country it doesn’t matter—you’re glassing distance, not close cover.

TORIC 12.5×50 — The Western Hunter’s Secret Weapon | TORIC Binocular Lineup

TRACT designed the 12.5×50 specifically for Western hunters who need maximum detail and light-gathering power—without jumping all the way up to a 15×56 that requires a tripod for every use.

TORIC Binocular Lineup – Glassing from a tripod is key to increasing resolution!

Built for |TORIC Binocular Lineup 12.5×50

Mountain hunting (elk, mule deer, sheep, goat)

Glassing across canyons and basins

Western hunters who currently carry both binoculars and a spotting scope

PRS and long-range shooters

Hunters using a tripod regularly

Why the geometry works |TORIC Binocular Lineup 12.5×50

The 12.5x magnification gives you the reach to identify antler tines, ear flicks, and the subtle shape of a bedded mule deer at distances where 10x binoculars show you only a blob. The 50mm objective keeps the exit pupil at 4.0mm—identical to the 8×32—which is workable for most of the hunting day.

Critical: at 12.5x, hand-shake becomes a real factor. This is a tripod binocular when you’re glassing for more than 60 seconds at a stretch. The TORIC 12.5×50 includes a built-in tripod adapter mount. Pair it with the TRACT Ultimate Glassing Kit (carbon-fiber tripod, pan head, adapter) and you have a long-range glassing system that replaces a spotting scope for most hunting tasks.

WHY 12.5x AND NOT 12x: TRACT specifically engineered the 12.5x magnification (not the more common 12x) to preserve a slightly wider field of view than a 15x while still delivering the long-distance resolution Western hunters need. The half-x matters.

TORIC Binocular Line Up – TORIC UHD 12.5×50 Binocular

TORIC 15×56 — The Long-Range Spotter | TORIC Binocular Lineup

The 15×56 is the specialist tool at the top of the lineup. This is what the Dark Lord of Optics (DLO) and serious Western backcountry hunters reach for when they’re going to be glassing big country for hours from a tripod.

Built for | TORIC 15×56

Tripod-mounted long-range glassing

Alpine hunting (sheep, goat, high-country mule deer)

PRS shooters and long-range target spotters

Hunters who used to carry a spotting scope and want lower magnification with binocular ergonomics

Stand hunters glassing fields/feed plots at extreme range

Why the geometry works | TORIC 15×56

The 56mm objectives collect more light than any other binocular in the lineup. The 3.7mm exit pupil is on the smaller side, but at 15x magnification on a tripod, you’re mostly using this binocular in good light when your pupil is at 2–3mm anyway—so the small exit pupil is not a real-world limitation.

At 15x, this is not a hand-hold binocular. Period. It’s built around the assumption that you’ll be glassing from a tripod for 30 minutes to several hours at a time. Used that way, it delivers a steady, magnified view that picks bedded animals out of shadow at ranges where 10x binoculars give you nothing useful.

Pick Your TORIC by Where You Hunt | TORIC Binocular Lineup

Hunting Region / Style

First Choice

Alternate

Eastern hardwoods, treestand whitetail

8×32

8×42

Eastern public-land big woods

8×42

10×42

Bowhunting (any terrain)

8×32

8×42

Turkey hunting

8×32

8×42

Midwest CRP / farm country whitetail

10×42

8×42

Open prairie / antelope

10×50

10×42

Mule deer in open Western country

10×50

12.5×50

Mountain elk, sheep, goat

12.5×50

15×56

Long-range glassing from tripod

15×56

12.5×50

PRS shooter spotting impacts

15×56

12.5×50

One binocular for everything

8×42

10×42

How to Order | TORIC Binocular Lineup

Every TORIC binocular comes with TRACT’s unconditional lifetime warranty, flat-rate shipping, and a 30-day no-questions-asked return policy.
