It\u2019s not something I\u2019ve ever considered in my fairly long life of firearms, <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/tractoptics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"hunting\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"315\">hunting<\/a>, and shooting. At first, the thought of entering a Precision <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tract-optics.co.za\/rifle-scope-accessories-you-might-consider\/\">Rifle<\/a> Series match seemed remarkably close to the once-a-month golfer entering a four-day tournament. Come to find out, after a lot of research, it\u2019s not like that at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From every single source I\u2019ve talked to either over the phone, in person, or on a forum, the thing that has stood out to me the most about getting into PRS <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tractoptics.com\/rifle-scope-accessories-you-might-consider\/\" title=\"Rifle Scope Accessories You Might Consider\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shooting<\/a> is the people involved. Apparently, it\u2019s an incredibly accepting community to newcomers. \u201cPeople will trip over themselves to help you out, let you shoot their <a title=\"TRACT TORIC 2.5-15\u00d744 Review\" href=\"https:\/\/tractoptics.com\/blog\/tract-toric-2-5-15x44-review1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rifles<\/a>, try their <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tract-optics.co.za\/18-turkey-hunting-gear-essentials\/\">gear<\/a>.\u201d Comments like these I heard repeatedly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re new to anything, knowing the level of acceptance in the current community, and that this one in particular, truly cares about your being there makes a world of difference. Throughout my career in the outdoor industry, acceptance has always been commonplace. Whereas on the golf course or country club, probably not so much.<\/span><\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Find_a_Shoot_to_Watch_PRS_Shooting\"><\/span><b>Find a Shoot to Watch PRS Shooting\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Get a feel for the environment. See how the shooters handle themselves. Learn what type of equipment is necessary to compete at a high level. You may never compete as a top-level shooter. But knowing what those guys and gals are using will give you a general idea of the list of equipment you can work toward compiling.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watching a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tractoptics.com\/shooting-22lr-rifle-in-a-whole-new-way\/\" title=\"Shooting a 22LR Rifle in a Whole New Way\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shoot<\/a> will also give you an idea as to what to wear. You\u2019re moving quite a bit so rugged, earth-colored clothing is probably going to help you fit in most. There are two-day matches as well, but may as well crawl before we walk. Something else I heard during my research was that people tend to say, \u201cI want to shoot PRS.\u201d But then they sit back and collect parts and build out their kit before they compete. Just jump in and have fun is the general consensus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Take_What_Rifle_You_Have\"><\/span><b>Take What Rifle You Have<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cRun what you brung.\u201d I can\u2019t take credit for that one. As mentioned, you don\u2019t need to build out an expensive setup before shooting. Take your deer <a title=\"30mm vs 1 Inch Rifle Scope\" href=\"https:\/\/tractoptics.com\/blog\/30mm-vs-1-inch-rifle-scope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rifle<\/a>, a bipod and shooting bag if you have them, and go shoot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s the process of actually doing it, testing the waters so to speak, that will first determine whether shooting PRS is a one and done for you, and two, should you decide to move forward, give you a better idea of the proper equipment you will need to improve your scores. Again, it sounds like the veterans you\u2019re paired with will give you tips, answer questions, and even let you test their gear. A lot of us are naturally competitive. And it\u2019s easy to let emotions take over and ruin what should be a fun experience. Sure, strive to do well. But don\u2019t let your expectations run too high. Your first <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tractoptics.com\/top-competition-cartridges-for-2024\/\" title=\"Top Competition Cartridges for 2024\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shoot<\/a> is all about creating the foundation by which you\u2019ll continue to build on should you pursue <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tract-optics.co.za\/precision-rimfire-competitions\/\">competitive shooting<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safety is <\/span><b><i>always <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">important, especially so in your first competitive shoot. There are certain safety aspects you must adhere to to keep from getting disqualified. Another great quote I heard was \u201cslow is fast,\u201d meaning take your time, don\u2019t get in a hurry. Like any hunting situation where you\u2019ve rushed a <a title=\"5 Reasons Why You Missed the Shot\" href=\"https:\/\/tractoptics.com\/blog\/5-reasons-why-you-missed-the-shot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot and missed<\/a>, the competitive shoot will tempt you to rush.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">May as well make each shot count rather than trying to hurriedly <a title=\"5 Tips for Shooting Moving Targets\" href=\"https:\/\/tractoptics.com\/blog\/5-tips-for-shooting-moving-targets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shoot every target<\/a> at every station. Many beginners feel rushed to try and get all six shots off per station. It\u2019s something the vets see repeatedly. Instead, try and get off three or four at a pace that allows you to find a good rest and make a good shot. You\u2019ll score much better that way.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I have yet to participate in a PRS shoot. But thanks to all the information I received, it makes taking those first steps toward competing a lot less daunting.
