style=\"text-align: justify\">Like a lot of red-blooded Americans, I love to shoot. I can remember walking around in the woods when I was young with my trusty Marlin model 60 rifle. When I graduated high school, I joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tract-optics.co.za\/best-sniper-movies\/\">military<\/a> and that fueled my love of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tract-optics.co.za\/5-reasons-why-i-enjoy-shooting-prs-competitions\/\">shooting<\/a> even more. My unit had a large number of competitive shooters, so I began <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tractoptics.com\/top-competition-cartridges-for-2024\/\" title=\"Top Competition Cartridges for 2024\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shooting handgun matches and found I really enjoyed the competition<\/a> and comradery. Well, over the years life happened, I retired from the military and had a family. Shooting became a luxury that I simply didn\u2019t have the time or money for any longer.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fast_Forward_10_Years_Competitive_Rimfire\"><\/span>Fast Forward 10 Years Competitive Rimfire<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p style=\"text-align: justify\">A friend gave me an AR-15 lower as a Christmas present and I caught the shooting bug again. It started with shooting handgun matches because that&#8217;s what I was familiar with, but I wanted to push my comfort zone. So, I decided to try long range <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tract-optics.co.za\/videosview\/toric-2-5-15x44-sfp-turret-reset-to-zero\/\">rifle<\/a> competitions which I absolutely loved. However, as I was found out quickly, competing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tractoptics.com\/getting-into-prs-shooting\/\" title=\"Getting Into PRS Shooting\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">precision rifle series<\/a> matches came with a few drawbacks for me personally.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Family_Time\"><\/span>Family Time<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p style=\"text-align: justify\">For starters a nice <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tract-optics.co.za\/vaughn-precision-toric-30mm-review\/\">precision rifle<\/a> can cost a lot of money. Did I mention I now have a family? A wife, two kids and a mortgage to be exact. I realize you can <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tractoptics.com\/rifle-marksmanship-trigger-control-success\/\" title=\"Rifle Marksmanship : Trigger Control Equals Success\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shoot a stock rifle<\/a> in production class but even a production rifle rig cost $2500+.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\">Most importantly, I wanted to spend some time with my family. All this practicing, reloading and going to matches is time I could never get back with my young boys. This really wasn&#8217;t feasible so I started looking for an alternative that would allow me to complete but not come with so many down sides.<\/p><h4 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Competitive_Rimfire_Was_a_Perfect_Fit\"><\/span>Competitive Rimfire Was a Perfect Fit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p style=\"text-align: justify\">This was when I discovered precision rimfire matches and, more specifically, the <a href=\"https:\/\/midatlanticrimfireseries.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mid Atlantic Rimfire Series or MARS<\/a>. These matches really appealed to me because they were run just like a traditional precision rifle match. They use the same props, stages and time limits. The only difference is you are <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tractoptics.com\/long-range-shooting-etiquette\/\" title=\"Long Range Shooting Etiquette\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shooting 22LR at ranges<\/a> from 25-300 yards. Not only did it cost significantly less and require a lower time commitment, but my kids love to shoot .22\u2019s as well. My boys are currently 9 and 11 years old. My older son is on his second full year of competition and my youngest son just started.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\">Another big advantage is that these matches don\u2019t typically run all day like a traditional centerfire match and the competitors aren\u2019t as intense. Most off the shelf target models will fit the bill with good match ammo. Popular options I would recommend are the <a href=\"https:\/\/cz-usa.com\/product\/cz-457-varmint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CZ 455\/457<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tikka.fi\/en-us\/rifles\/tikka-t1x\/t1x-mtr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tikka T1X<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bergara.online\/us\/rifles\/rimfire\/b-14r\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bergara B14 R<\/a>, and of course the ubiquitous <a href=\"https:\/\/ruger.com\/products\/1022\/overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruger 10\/22<\/a> with a target barrel.<\/li><li>A good <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/tractoptics.com\/riflescopes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" title=\"scope\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"971\">scope<\/a> that allows you to dial for elevation and can focus down to at least 25 yards and has at least 10X in magnification. A variable power scope is very helpful and I highly recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/tractoptics.com\/riflescopes\/toric-uhd-30mm-4-20x50-ffp-mrad-prs-long-range-rifle-scope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TORIC 4-20&#215;50 MRAD PRS<\/a>.<\/li><li>Bipod<\/li><li>Rear bag. Some sand in an old sock is fine<\/li><li>A few magazines. 2 is good, 3 is better. Just make sure they&#8217;re reliable<br \/>Trustworthy ammo and ballistic data for that ammo from 25-300+ yards. Rimfire ammo can be tricky. It is a year-long cumulative points competition for practical 22LR precision rifle shooters. Of course, you don&#8217;t really need to participate in the points race, just attending the matches is fun enough but it&#8217;s really fun to have a goal to train for throughout the year.<\/p><h4 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MARS_is_Great_For_Beginners\"><\/span>MARS is Great For Beginners<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/midatlanticrimfireseries.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MARS<\/a> has beginner events and even offers affordable, private coaching to help you get started. Lots of new shooters and juniors are joining the ranks.
